On the state-of-the-art and some open challenges in mechanical inverse design

Topology Optimization (TO) has evolved as a powerful and versatile tool for solving mechanical and multiphysics design problems across the scales. Examples range from giga-voxel resolutions in suspension bridge design, over tailoring of non-linear stress-strain curves at will, to synthesis of quantum-opto-mechanical resonators in the nano-scale.

The talk will give a State-Of-The-Art overview of TO, discuss recent efforts in substituting efficient gradient-based approaches with AI/LLMs, and discuss some recent developments in including internal contact through Third Medium Contact (TMC) approaches as well as challenges in establishing appropriate design parameterizations when optimizing architected materials for fracture response.
